Joseph Miller Presents at the Inaugural UnityPoint Health Compliance Education Day

Attorney Joseph M. Miller led a discussion on the topic of overpayments and internal investigations at the first annual Compliance Education Day at UnityPoint Health on Thursday, October 17, in Cedar Rapids.Healthcare professionals from departments all across the UnityPoint system joined together for this one-day seminar to bolster the system’s robust compliance program with presentations from expert speakers on specific topics related to compliance of healthcare laws and regulations.Specific laws exist when healthcare entities receive an overpayment through Medicare (there are similar rules under Medicaid). Miller’s presentation provided practical guidance on responding to potential overpayments and the False Claims Act (FCA) exposure based on the current enforcement landscape. The main objectives from Miller’s presentation included understanding the 60-day payment rule, the internal investigation process, and the impact of recent cases on the enforcement landscape.Shirley Bailey, Compliance Director at UnityPoint Health, organized the seminar as a way to bring people together across the system and continue to build the compliance program.“The speakers that joined us for our first-ever compliance day brought their expertise, which was so helpful.
