Laurie L. Dawley, Joseph M. Miller, and Laura L. Folkerts presented as guest speakers to students of The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, on Monday, March 27. The Attorneys’ presentation titled Legal Aspects of Physical Therapy Practice covered important topics such as risk management, real estate purchasing, quality assurance, human resource issues, business, and reporting obligations. Students were provided with essential information and resources as it’s related to Business Entity Formation, Purchasing a Practice, Real Estate Purchasing and Leasing Considerations, Employment Contracts, OSHA Compliance Non-compete restrictions, Fraud and abuse laws, including Stark, Anti-kickback, and the False Claims ActRisk Management & Quality Assurance Dawley, Miller, and Folkerts were invited to present by Amy L. Kimball MPT, PhD., ATC, Clinical Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, University of Iowa.
ATTORNEY PRESENTERS
Laurie L. Dawley is an Attorney and Senior Vice President at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll. Her work focuses on business law, banking and finance law, real estate law, and mergers and acquisitions. She serves on the Firm’s board of directors and is the past chair of the Firm’s business practice group and associate/recruiting committee. She has experience conducting farmland auctions and managing large foreclosure actions involving numerous residential and commercial properties.
Joseph M. Miller represents companies and individuals in matters relating to business and healthcare. Joseph draws on his experience as a federal judicial clerk, in-house counsel, and an attorney at a large law firm in Phoenix, Arizona, to provide enduring and practical solutions to his clients. Joseph is admitted to practice in both Iowa and Arizona.
Laura Folkerts is an attorney at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll practicing primarily in the area of Labor & Employment law, including employment-related litigation. She advises employers on employment matters, assists with training, policy review, and development, and handles investigations and complaints, both internal and before civil rights commissions. Before joining Shuttleworth, Laura worked at a law firm in Waterloo, Iowa, where she maintained a general practice with an emphasis on labor and employment.
