Summer Associates

Our goal for our summer associates at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll is to provide them with a realistic view of what life is like as an associate at our firm. Our summer program is designed to give each summer associate a hands-on, real-world look at who we are and what we do. The assignments given to summer associates relate to ongoing client matters and are representative of work performed by the attorneys at S&I.

We understand and appreciate that many students have not yet targeted a specific practice area for the future legal careers. Our summer associate program is designed to provide you with experience in each of the firm’s practice areas.

1L Diversity Fellows

Shuttleworth & Ingersoll hosts a 1L Diversity Fellow every summer. The goal of this Fellowship is to introduce a law student that has been historically underrepresented in law firms to Shuttleworth & Ingersoll and the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area (also known as the corridor).

The six-week Fellowship will have a flexible start date to allow the Fellow to pursue other summer endeavors such as study abroad or a judicial internship. In all other aspects and intentions, the Fellowship will be modeled after our Summer Associate program.

Additional details

Over the course of the summer, each summer associate will have the opportunity to attend or be involved in a wide variety of legal projects. For example, in the past our summer associates have attended and participated in client meetings, depositions, hearings, trial preparation, trials, mediations, bankruptcy hearings, administrative hearings, real estate closings, and many other significant legal events.

It is our intention that by the end of summer, you will have become both a better student and a better attorney. We strive to provide each summer associate with detailed feedback as the summer progresses. This feedback is given both on a project-by-project basis, and with more formal mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations.

Finally, we believe the summer should be a fun and enjoyable time for all of our attorneys. The summer at S&I has numerous opportunities to get to know everyone outside the office. Our past summer activities have included a day of fun at Lake McBride State Park, multiple golf outings for the Linn County Bar Association and the Young Lawyer’s Division, a bicycle ride with the Bar Association, a firm night with the Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball team, BBQ’s at partners’ homes, participation in the Junior Achievement Sand Volleyball fundraiser, and numerous informal luncheons and after-work gatherings.

When S&I looks for summer associates, our plan is to look for people who will be an excellent fit and will eventually become full-time attorneys with the firm. S&I is interested in hiring summer associates who have an excellent work ethic, a strong academic background, and the creativity, desire and motivation to become outstanding members of both the firm and the surrounding community. In a nutshell, we are looking for not only great lawyers, but talented and well-rounded people who will be a good fit in our firm.
